Children/Youth

Scouts BSA. (Former boyscouts).

We currently sponsor the scouts program. Cub scouts is the young children consisting of boys and girls in elementary. And the troop which is the regular school kids(boys only) meet at the same location.

Oratorical contest

Every year the American Legion conducts an oratorical contest. It is a ten minute speech as well as a five minute speech about the constitution. To be considered to compete you must be a U.S. citizen and enrolled in an accredited high school (9-12 grade) in the United States. Candidates will compete at the district level for the local level event. First thru third could potentially win a monetary award for scholarship use. The district level winner advances to division level. And the division level winner advances to state. At state you recieve a minimum of $2000.00 scholarship. We have had several candidates thru the years from our state to go to national contest and do very well. The Alabama candidate last year won national.  If your interested please come by our post on the First Thursday of each month or contact your school guidance counselor.

 

 Coloring Contest

Each year we conduct a coloring contest for the younger children located in the City of Haleyville School system. We also do a poster contest in conjunction with the coloring contest for the children in the school as well.

 

 Essay Contest

We conduct an essay contest for the older youth who wish to participate. We send these off to college professors who are willing to assist in grading and reviewing the essays. The students whom place in the top 3 recieve cash prizes.
